Thamara Valayam Mezhukkupuratti/Stir-fried Lotus Root & Award


Recipe for Thamara Valayam Mezhukkupuratti/Stir-fried Lotus Root 


Ingredients :

Lotus root : 1 cup (sliced thinly, Can use fresh or frozen)
Garlic : 1 tbsp (crushed)
Ginger : 1″ piece (peeled and grated)
Small Red Onion /Shallots : 5-8 (crushed)
Crushed Red Chilli Flakes : 1 tbsp
Crushed Black Pepper : 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder : 1/4 tsp
Vinegar : 1 tsp (mixed with 1/4 cup water)
Sesame oil : 1 tbsp
Sesame Seeds : 1 tbsp
Salt to taste

Method of Preparation :

1. Put the sliced lotus root into vinegar water as you slice it.
2. Add very little water to the sliced lotus root, add turmeric powder,salt and boil it with lid closed.
3. Cook until the lotus root slices start to change color – they turn a bit translucent looking.When the pieces turn soft (will take about 5 minutes); Drain the excess water.
4. Heat a frying pan with the oil, lightly saute the crushed garlic, crushed red chilli flakes, crushed shallots and fry till golden brown.
5. Add the boiled lotus root slices and turn over and cook a couple more minutes.
6. Add the sesame seeds, crushed black pepper. Remove from the fire. Serve hot or cold.

    I have never cooked or eaten Lotus root – I have seen it in the korean store and have always wondered what to do with it . This looks just like Vendakka mezhukkupuratti . I am going to try making some too .I love the name you gave the dish Thamara Valayam ..very interesting.

    Lotus root has always been one of my favourite food….esp. in the summer time, they are wonderful to cook with pork sparerib, and a simple stir-fry like this.

    this is an interesting recipe. i have seen lotus roots in the frozen section in a supermarket. How should i select them? That looks brown in colour. is it fine?
