Revisiting old favorite recipe with new pictures!

It has been a lot of fun to go through my archives. I have 412 recipes at this point, some of the recipes that I made years ago were really good, but the pictures are not appealing, that I think deserve a second look! Oh yeah!  definitely my pictures have improved, but are no where near where some of you are! I still have a long ways to go with my photography…
 
So without further ado, onto the recipe…Olan is the simplest, traditional dish of Kerala (South India) which is enriched with coconut milk. Any Sadya traditional Kerala feast is complete without olan on the menu. Ash gourds and cowpeas, flavoured with coconut milk,coconut oil and fresh curry leaves. This is a less spicy dish so everyone including children enjoys it. So why not try out this recipe? …don’t forget to give me a feedback though!
Olan-Kerala Sadya Recipe

 

Olan Recipe – Kerala Olan Recipe – Ash Gourd & Cowpeas Stewed in Coconut Milk

Preparation Time : 10 minutes
Cooking Time : 20 minutes
Serves : 4

Ingredients:
Ash gourd /Elavan /Kumbalanga : 1 cup (diced)
Cow peas /Red eyed Beans/Vanpayar : 1/2 cup
Pumpkin /Manthanga /Mathan : 1 cup (diced)
Green chillies : 3-4 nos (slit lengthwise)
Thin coconut milk /Radaam paal : 1 cup
Thick coconut milk/Thani paal : 1/4 cup
Curry leaves : a sprig
Coconut oil : 1 tbsp
Salt to taste

Kerala Olan Recipe

 

How to make Olan – Kerala Olan – Ash Gourd & Cowpeas Stewed in Coconut Milk :

1. Soak the black eyed beans overnight, approximately around 6-8hrs and pressure cook or boil it.
2. Remove the skin from the ash gourd and pumpkin and chop into small pieces.
3. Once the bean is half cooked, add the chopped pumpkin, ash groud and add the thin coconut milk into it.
4. Add salt and green chilies, once the vegetables are cooked well; add the thick coconut milk into it.
5. Reduce the fire to low and stir it slowly until the mix is cooked well and remove from the fire.
6. Season with coconut oil and a sprig of curry leaves.
7. Mix well and cover it and allow it to stand for 10-20 minutes before serving. (Note : This will help the dish to absorb the flavour of curry leaves and coconut oil.) Serve and Enjoy!
