Amish Cinnamon Friendship Bread Recipe

Yes…from the name you guessed it right! This is the friendship bread that gets passed around from friend to friend.

My friend gave me a ziploc bag filled with some starter batter along with an instruction sheet; to keep squeezing  the bag for 10 days and add some ingredients and then make bread. It’s was really fun to mush the batter everyday. So I and my kids played with the bag for the 10 days and then came baking day…I baked the bread.

Needless to say! It was sooo delicious and makes a great gift! Seriously, the ingredients are like vanilla pudding, sugar, milk cinnamon…so how can it not be good! now I have my bags of batter ready to go to my friends.:) Thank you Claudia for passing the wonderful recipe and starter with us.

The recipe I received says that only the “Amish know how to create the secret starter”. Well, quick google search led me to starter recipes like this...so here I am linking the starter recipe with tips about freezing the starter for you to begin with…do try and pass to your friends and start this wonderful tradition. 🙂 Enjoy!

Amish Cinnamon Friendship Loaf /Bread Recipe
Preparation Time : 10 days
Baking Time : 1 hr
Serves : 2 large loaf

See here for the recipe and instructions on how to use the starter …I have not tried this starter but they all looked the same.

Ingredients:
Gallon ziploc bags : 4

Flour : 4 1/2 cups
Sugar : 31/2 cups + 3 tbsp
Milk : 2 cups
Canola oil : 1 cup
Vanilla essence : 1 tsp
Eggs : 3 large
Baking powder : 1 1/2 tsp
Salt : 1/2 tsp
Baking soda : 1/2 tsp
Cinnamon Powder : 3 1/2 tsp
Instant Vanilla pudding mix : 1 large box
Optional : raisins, chocolate chips or nuts

How to make Amish Cinnamon Friendship Bread :

Important Preparation Tips:

  • Do not use metal spoons or metal bowls for mixing.
  • Do not refrigerate.
  • It is normal for the batter to rise, thicken, bubble and fermant. Burp the bag as needed to remove the air.

Day 1 : receive the starter, do nothing. Just place the bag on your counter top. (the recipe for the starter is below)Day 1:
Day 2 : Squeeze the bag and let the air out of the bag.
Day 3 : Squeeze the bag
Day 4 : Squeeze the bag
Day 5 : Squeeze the bag
Day 6 : Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk. Squeeze the bag several times until mixed.
Day 7 : Squeeze the bag
Day 8 : Squeeze the bag
Day 9: Squeeze the bag
Day 10: In a large non-metallic bowl, combine the batter with 11/2 cup flour, 1 1/2cup sugar and 11/2 cup milk. Mix with a wooden or plastic spoon. Pour four 1 cup starters into four 1 gallon zip lock bags. Give those 4 starters away to friends or family with a copy of the instructions. Preheat the oven to 325 F.

To the remaining batter in the bowl add eggs, oil, 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of milk , vanilla essence, salt, 2 cups of flour, 2 tsp cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, instant vanilla pudding mix and mix well.
In a separate bowl, mix 11/2 tsp of cinnamon and 1/4 cup of sugar. Grease and dust half of the cinnamon /sugar mixture into 2 large loaf pans. Pour the batter evenly into the pans and sprinkle the remaning sugar/cinnamon mixture over the top.

Bake for 1 hour or until done. Test with a toothpick.Cool the loaf until it loosen evenly from the pan, about 10 mins.

Notes:

  • You can use your imagination and put your own spin on it.You can 1/2 to 1 cup raisins, nuts or chocolate chips to the batter.
  • If you keep a one bag of starter for yourself you will be baking every 10 days. 🙂
