Kerala Kadala Curry Recipe – Puttu Kadala Curry Recipe – Black Chickpea in Roasted Coconut Gravy

Yep, it’s been so long since we had a chat, right?  I was hoping to say hi to you all in between, but it didn’t work out. Now I am glad to be back and to be able to speak with you again. This was an unexpected break, just like some other unexpected things happened in the past and I must say it did me some good.

So how is the New Year coming along? I must say time definitely flies really fast! Feels like it was only yesterday that it was New Year’s eve and my mind was filled with a multitude of beautiful images and memories from happy times before. Wishing you all a happy, joyous and blessed 2013!

Now, let’s get back to the topic, shall we? Today I wanted to share something from my homeland, it’s a familiar and most popular breakfast combinations inside and outside the homes of all Keralites. Kadala curry/ Black chickpea curry in a deliciously smooth spiced roasted coconut gravy along with puttu/steamed rice cakes. If you ever happen to visit a Kerala home especially during breakfast time, you are most likely to be treated to a bowl of this simple and flavorful Kadala curry with puttu/steamed rice cakes.

Yes you guessed it right! I have posted the  kadala curry recipe on my early days of blogging, but today i’m sharing little different version from the old recipe. Hope you all  like this version too. Now lets plunge into the recipe.  Try this simplest and popular kadala curry recipe and let me know how it turned out buddies đŸ™‚

Kadala Curry Recipe – Puttu Kadala Curry Recipe – Kerala Style Black Chickpea Curry Recipe
Preparation Time : 20 minutes + Saoking the chickpea : overnight
Cooking time : 20 minutes
Serves : 4-6

Ingredients :

To Pressure cook :

Black Chana/Kadala/Kala Chana  : 2 cups cooked (soak the dried chana in enough water for at least 8 hrs)

Turmeric Powder : 1/4tsp
Salt to taste
To Roast and Grind :
Grated coconut : 3/4 cup (fresh grated or frozen)
Small Red Onion /Pearl onion : 2 (sliced)
Garlic : 2 (cloves)
Coriander seeds : 1 tbsp or substitute with coriander powder : 1 tsp
Whole Garam Masala : Fennel seeds – 1 tsp, 
Cardamom : 1 pod, 
Cinnamon stick : 1/2 inch, 
Star anise :1 
Whole Black pepper : 10 nos
Curry Leaves : few
Coconut oil : 1 tbsp
For Gravy:
Onion : 1 cup (sliced)
Red small onions /Pearl onions : 2-4 (sliced)
Green chillies : 3 (slit lengthwise)

Red chilly powder : 1 tsp 
Turmeric powder : 1/4 tsp

Mustard seeds : 1/2 tsp
Dry whole  red chillies : 2 nos

Sliced coconut pieces /Thenga kothu : 1 tbsp
Curry leaves : 1 sprig
Coconut oil : 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste

How to make Kerala Kadala Curry  – Puttu Kadala Curry Recipe:


1. Soak kadala/black channa over night and pressure cook them with adding enough water, little turmeric powder and salt for 5-6 whistles. Open when the pressure settles and reserve extra stock from the kadala/black chickpea for the gravy.
2. Heat coconut oil in a pan and add the whole spices; saute for a few seconds. Add the sliced pearl onions, sliced garlic, curry leaves. Saute for a minute.
3. Now add the grated coconut. Saute and roast on low fire till coconut turns to  medium brown in color. Remove from the fire and let it cool. 
4. Transfer the roasted coconut masala to a blender and grind the ingredients to a smooth paste adding very little water.
5. In a big deep pan;  heat  coconut oil and splutter mustards seeds,add dry red chillies. 
6. Now add the sliced coconut pieces and saute until they turn brown, add the sliced onion, sliced red small onions, green chillies, salt and curry leaves. Saute until they turn light brown in color.
7. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, saute for a few seconds and add the reserved stock from the cooked kadala. Bring to a boil.
8. Now add the ground coconut paste and cooked kadala. Mix well and adjust the salt. Cook until semi thick gravy. When it is done, remove and keep the dish covered until serving.
9.  Serve hot with Puttu or Appam & Enjoy!

    Hi . This is sooo soo what i wanted. One doubt. the oil used for gravy – 1teaspoon of coconut oil? isnt that too less đŸ˜€ đŸ˜€ or is it just what we need?

    today is the 4th time I am trying your Kadala recipe…and this is the best original Kadala Curry recipe I have found.

    I was amazed by the authentic taste that I got whn i tried it first time and this is a keeper recipe for me.
